CONCRETE LINE
This brooch carries the outline pattern of Traditional Thai hill tribe textiles with an embroidery technique. These pieces of fabric were handmade by Hmong women; every New Year for good luck, they will wear a new outfit so the old pieces of fabric would be used to make a new product such as blankets, bags and wallets. The fabric patterns are developed into brighter and wider range of colors patterns and with simpler embroidery details while the outline of the patterns remains the same.
The hill tribe textiles interest me, because the patterns and colors inspired from flowers and plants. They use an embroidery technique to record what they see and create geometric patterns. For me, Hmong women are like graphic designers, who use needles as a tool, creating their own unique signature patterns and passing these processes along to the next generation.
